Badrinath Pandit and Acharya Vyakul
June 20–July 12, 2014
Adams and Ollman is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Badrinath Pandit and Acharya Vykual on view from June 20 through July 12, 2014.
Badrinath Pandit (c.1915-1999) and Acharya Vyakul (1930-2000) were 20th Century Indian Tantric practitioners whose paintings evoke Hindu deities and spiritual practices in simplified, abstract form. Acharya Vyakul, perhaps the most well-known maker of Tantra, first came to the West’s attention in 1989 in the seminal exhibition Magiciens de la Terre organized by Jean-Hubert Martin and presented at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Grand Halle at the Parc de la Villette. Little is known about Badrinath Pandit, but he was a highly regarded Sanskrit scholar and painter and it is believed that he was Acharya Vyakul’s teacher.
On view at Adams and Ollman will be a selection of paintings by Badrinath Pandit that depict shaligrams or stones that represents aspects of Vishnu, the God of Preservation, as well as works by Acharya Vyakul that blend traditional Tantric imagery with Indian folk art. |
