Johanna Jackson: Some Transitional Objects From My Extended Phenotype January 4–February 1, 2020

Adams and Ollman is pleased to announce two exhibitions opening in January. Some Transitional Objects from My Extended Phenotype, a solo exhibition of new sculptures by Johanna Jackson, will be on view January 4 through February 1.

Johanna Jackson makes basic tools and domestic objects, for both use and for metaphor. The artist's rugs, picture frames, furniture and bowls exist at the confluence of life and work, form and function, and art and craft. Considering the activities and objects which connect us to the past, primary in the artist’s craft-based lexicon is pottery, one of humankind’s oldest practices. Jackson's porcelain vessels, plates and cups embody this lineage and assert the animism of everyday objects. Proudly self-reliant and imperfect, each piece appears to be shaped from the experience and knowledge of what it is like to hold and touch, as if the objects themselves are influenced by how and by whom they are used.

Presented in arrangements on furniture hand-built in collaboration with artist Chris Johanson, porcelain candelabras hold handmade candles, family photos are presented in frames, mirrors reflects back that which we may not be able to see, vases, many of which have patterns that reference disappearing clouds, the sun, or her father’s doodles, hold flowers. Each object asserts a purpose and a personality, forming synergistic exchanges with one another. Meaning is made apparent through the relationships between and among the discrete works and between the artist and her collaborators, which include the earth, fire, electricity, fellow artists and tradition.

Johanna Jackson (b. 1972) lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Solo and two-person exhibitions include: bow bow with Sahar Khoury curated by Tony Cox at CANADA, New York; The Middle Riddle with Chris Johanson at the Journal Gallery, Brooklyn; What It Means to Learn with Dana Dart-McLean at Human Resources, Los Angeles, California; The Big Fig at the Portland Museum of Modern Art, Oregon; and Money on Fire, a video commission for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California. Her work has also been exhibited in group shows at the Oakland Museum of California; Marlborough Gallery, New York; Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles, California; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, among others.
