Ryan McLaughlin: Prius Wig
April 28–June 3, 2017

Adams and Ollman and Laurel Gitlen are pleased to announce an exhibition with Ryan McLaughlin at Adams and Ollman. The exhibition, the artist's first in Portland, opens with a reception on Friday, April 28 and will be on view through June 3.

McLaughlin creates intimately-scaled paintings that form a unique register between abstraction and figuration. Using a restrained palette—often comprised solely of earth tones including dusty pinks, tawny beiges and terra cotta reds—the artist makes marks that oscillate between painterly and graphic. A mix of staccato brushstrokes and informal or casual passages of paint interlock, forming and deforming recognizable imagery. What results addresses and questions painting’s role and history as text, code, and sign.

Ryan McLaughlin (born 1980, Worcester, MA) received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Recent solo exhibitions include Impreza Earth, David Petersen Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; TraffiQ, Laura Bartlett Gallery, London; Lacus PM, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne; Raisins, Laurel Gitlen, New York City; and Barbara (I and II) at Lüttgenmeijer, Berlin. McLaughlin's work has been exhibited in group exhibitions at Metro Pictures, Sikkema Jenkins, both New York; Tanya Leighton, Berlin; Off Vendome, Dusseldorf.
