Jose Bonell’s figurative paintings depict psychological scenarios charged with anticipation, wry wit, and an appreciation of the daily absurdities of the human experience. Unencumbered by context, Bonell’s wide range of closely-cropped subjects including hands, feet, torsos, and candelabras, among other things, are caught in a series of zany, evocative moments. With quick marks and decisive washes of paint, he conjures elusive dreamscapes, balancing their philosophical heft of these follies with humor and humility.

Jose Bonell (b. 1989, Barcelona, ES; where he continues to live and work) was awarded the Prix Novembre in Vitry-sur-Seine, France, in 2020. Alongside Sara Bonache, he is the co-director of Unica Editions, founded in 2020, which publishes artist’s books and objects in limited series.
